  Taking the Lead: Building Partnerships to Strengthening Post Rape Care Services

Over the past 4 years, LVCT has partnered with GoK and other stakeholders to ensure delivery of Post Rape Care services.  LVCT utilized research results from an operational research study aimed at developing a module for delivery of post rape care services in resource limited settings to inform the development of national guidelines and standards.  These have included: 

These standards have included:

  1. National Guidelines on the Medical Management of Rape/Sexual Violence
  2. National Training curriculum for clinical care for survivors of sexual violence

National manual for training of trauma counselors for care of survivors of sexual violence

Post Rape Care sites have increased from 1 private health facility in 2004 to 19 public health facilities across the country in 2008.  LVCT been involved in the establishment of 15 of these health facilities.  These are:  

Services provided following sexual violence are:

  1. Clinical evaluation and documentation (forensic examination, evidence collection, specimen analysis and legal documentation);
  2. Clinical management (treatment of physical injuries, prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including HIV using HIV post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) offered routinely to all survivors of sexual violence who present within 72 hours and are tested HIV negative) and pregnancy prevention;
  3. Counselling services (for trauma experienced by the survivor and family/partners; HIV pre and post-test counselling; PEP adherence counselling; preparation for the criminal justice system);
  4. Referral mechanisms

3,000 survivors of sexual violence ranging 16 months to 102 years have been recipients of this range of services.  90% of survivors are female and over 50% are children aged below 18 years.  

Technical Assistance for Capacity Building forms a key part of sustainable health systems development have included:

  1. Training in PRC to approximately 350 physicians, clinicians and lab personnel
  2. Training in PRC to approximately 40 police officers
  3. Training in PRC to approximately 120 trauma counselors

LVCT continues to inform sexual violence policy reform at the international level based on our research and practice experience.  Staff from LVCT have participated as technical advisors and participants in key meetings; 

  1. The WHO Technical Committee for the development of international guidelines for HIV PEP for occupational and non-occupational exposures
  2. The WHO Technical Committee on developing guidelines for HIV Counselling and Testing in the context of Gender Based Violence
  3. Dr. Nduku Kilonzo, Director LVCT  is a member of the Coordinating Group of the Research Sexual Violence Research Initiative (www.svri.org); an initiative supported by WHO/Global Forum for Health Research and hosted by the Medical Research Council in South Africa that provides guidance and direction for sexual violence research internationally
